Kanye & Fiance Break off Engagement

Rapper Kanye West and his fiancée of a year and a half, designer Alexis Phifer have broken off their engagement, Phifer confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

"It's always sad when things like this end, and we remain friends,” Phifer tells PEOPLE. "I wish him the best in his future and all of his endeavors. He's one of the most talented people I've ever met."

Phifer was spotted on the red carpet sans her engagement ring at an "Evenings in Vogue" event on Thursday night in New York, where her clothing line, Ghita, was featured.

"They'd been having problems," a pal of West's says. "Kanye is really focused on his show; he's putting everything into the show right now. Alexis is a nice girl, but Kanye has been going through a rough time. They hit a rough patch and for now they've split."

According to the friend, Phifer and West, both 30, had been spending less time together in the last few weeks as the Grammy-winning star prepared for his nationwide "Glow in the Dark" tour. "I haven't seen [Alexis] around at all the last few times I’ve seen him recently," the friend added.

The couple, who have dated on and off since 2002, got engaged over a lobster and pasta dinner during a vacation on the island of Capri in August 2006.

A rep for West, currently on tour, had no comment.

f you thought the picture of rappers Lil Wayne and Baby kissing on the lips caused a stir in the hip-hop world, just wait till the book Hiding in Hip-Hop: Confessions of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry drops in 2008.

Written by former MTV producer Terrance Dean, Hiding in Hip-Hop has already lit up the internet -- no doubt with hot searches for sample chapters and excerpts from the memoir.

Already author of spiritually fluffy-sounding books Be Empowered: 30 Days of Meditation for Men of Color and Reclaim Your Power!: A 30-Day Guide to Hope, Healing, and Inspiration for Men of Color, Terrance Dean sold Hiding in Hip-Hop: Confessions of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry to Atria recently.

A Publishers Marketplace report titled "Publishers Lunch Deluxe: Lunch Weekly for Monday, January 29" gave this description of Terrance Dean's book deal:

"Terrance Dean's HIDING IN HIP-HOP: Confessions of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry, detailing the author's life as a closeted homosexual working in the film and music industry and his relationships with other closeted homosexuals -- film stars, rap artists, and music producers, to Krishan Trotman at Atria at auction by Karen E. If the internet hasn’t already proven to be a machine for exposure, then maybe the production team Wrightrax can supplant that thought.

After winning a highly-publicized Internet beat-making competition, Wrightrax found themselves in the same studio with Kanye West while they were working with another G.O.O.D. Music artist Big Sean.

“From working with Big Sean, we got a chance to get in the studio with Kanye while he was making the Graduation album and he said he wanted to sign us,” Deuce Wright explained. “We were in Atlanta and he was just playing some of our tracks and in the first ten minutes, he was like, 'I wanna sign ya'll.”

Though the signing with G.O.O.D. Music is a nice look for Wrightrax in the early stage of their career, they’re hoping to do big things for Hip Hop. “We just wanna be one of those staple powerhouses in music. We want to be spoken of in the same sentence as Timbaland, Quincy Jones or, of course, Kanye West.”

Diversified producers listed, yes, but the Deuce and B. Wright are up for the challenge. “We got bangers, head crackers, R&B baby makers. We're all over the place.”

Looks like they will be "getting out their dreams."

Lil Wayne's feverishly anticipated, infinitely delayed album Tha Carter III may not have a firm release date yet — latest word is it'll be out on June 10 — but boy, does it have some cover art. Since last night, when Amazon.com posted the oddly enthralling image to the left, the hip-hop blogs have been ablaze. Wayne, it would seem, wants the world to see his magnum opus as the work of a thoughtful, tatted-up toddler. Is it real? Is it fake? In sum, HUH?

First things first: Wayne's label confirms that yes, this is the actual cover art for Tha Carter III. Wow. Maybe all those times he dubbed himself "Weezy F. Baby, please say the baby," he wasn't honoring his mentor Bryan "Baby" Williams after all. He was just shouting out his inner mafioso-esque child! What's more, I think I finally understand why last summer, the one time I talked to Wayne — shortly before he abruptly began screaming profanities for no apparent reason and hung up on me — he told me he'd been recording Tha Carter III "my whole life... working on every album I ever dropped my whole life." I'd assumed it was just another semi-coherent boast, but I see now that he was being mad literal. Ladies and gents, we have now seen the face of the nursery-schooler who composed "Lollipop."

Okay, jokes aside (they're just too easy!), I actually kinda dig this cover. It's a clear play to place Carter III in the pantheon of all-time classic rap albums featuring baby pix: Illmatic, Ready to Die... Weezy's power resides in his unparalleled chutzpah, his refusal to surrender an inch of creative freedom to his legions of detractors. Why shouldn't he slap a patently ridiculous, self-important Photoshop job on the front of his new CD? Besides, if he's finalized his album cover, maybe that means we're a little closer to actually hearing this thing within our lifetimes. Hallelujah! But what do you think of all this?
